Processing: Kolwezi Concentrator

Ore from Tilwezembe and Kananga is being treated in the Group’s current processing facility, the Kolwezi Concentrator, and sold in the form of copper/cobalt concentrate.

Key stats:

  • Commenced operation in 1940
  • Connected to the rail network
  • Major investments in mid-1970s, mid-1980s and early 1990s
  • Design output: 655,000 tonnes concentrate per year
  • In need of major refurbishment when transferred to DCP

The Kolwezi Concentrator started operations in 1940 and was historically a major production unit with a design capacity of 655,000 tonnes of concentrate per year. Despite a number of major investments at various periods in its lifetime, the plant was in a poor state and needed major refurbishment when DCP took control in 2006.

Following initial refurbishment activity, the Kolwezi Concentrator was restarted in September 2006 using ore sourced from the Group’s Tilwezembe and Kananga mines. Concentrate shipments commenced in November 2006, transported by rail to South Africa before onward shipment.

Refurbishment activity is ongoing, and following the planned commissioning of a refurbished mill and floatation section towards the end of 2007, the Group expects a significant increase in ouput.
